Electric Main Gate

Anybody ever given any thought to installing an electric gate with a card reader?

It sure would make it easier for old gimps like me.

I think it is a great idea. That lock can be difficult sometimes. But, I wonder how much it would cost and it does not look like there is any power near by. Has anyone ever looked into the cost?

I agree that Uncle Harry is on to something. It would make it easier for we gimps and also help compliance with the gate policy which is mostly ignored and closure would be automatic. Most often the gate is open when I arrive and I do make a point of closing it when I leave regardless of finding it open.

Isn't there electric service at the bullseye range? There would be expense for the gate and the card reader and probably the greatest expense for initial issue of the cards. There would also be some savings in that new cards/keys would not have to be issued each year as inactive members could be voided in the system.

1. A ready and reliable power source
2. Cost to the members
3. Someone willing to be on call 24/7 to take care of problems
4. New construction in the near future that means we are going to move the gate to????
5. There is a possibility of the entrance to the club and the road being moved.
6. The fact that the present road to the club does not belong to us ...we only have a right of way.

The board is constantly making decisions to improve our facility. I personally would like to see a card reader/autogate,However; at this time it is one of our projects that must wait until other issues are resolved.

1. A ready and reliable power source
Is there not power available at the bullseye range?
2. Cost to the members
Maybe a survey to the members asking if a one-time assessment of 20-30.00 would be acceptible?
3. Someone willing to be on call 24/7 to take care of problems
Perhaps the gate installer can provide service on an annual contracted basis?
4. New construction in the near future that means we are going to move the gate to????
Would this then be a perfect time to incorporate a gate?

I'm certainly not intending to stir up any controversy but I think the addition of an electric gate would be a very positive improvement that would benefit all members.

I think the point of only presently having right-of-way is that the expense is too great on a road we could lose access to at any time.

Harry: Wayne is at the club every Tuesday evening, most Thursday evenings, the first and third Saturday of each month, and most Sundays. Why don't you stop by and talk to him sometime. I'm sure he'd be glad to explain in more detail some of the issues he addressed in his response.

62 isn't too old to open a gate. I'm 61 and don't mind it a bit. the pleasure I get out of Kettlefoot is certainly worth opening a lock.

Just came across your forum and thought I would throw in my 2 cents. I had my own company installing and repairing elect. gate operators. Since I have been considering joining your club which in my opinion is the best around I would be glad to work something out with whoever I need to. I could get the equipment at cost and install. Since I had a unfortunate accident and am not able to hold down a weekly job I had to close my company but still have connections and since I no longer work I would be availible if it gave any problems. I have had many discussions with many club members and officers over the years about putting a access control gate in for ease of access. I work for a company that does access control systems and have discussed this with the owner. We could do the electronics/cards at cost but the problem I have run into is getting a fence/gate company to actually come out to give a quote. Jim's post above may be able to solve that for us.

The largest issue is still the potential to move the entrance in the near future. power, connectivity, and equipment are all things we can solve. 24/7 support can be accomplished as well .(I would assist and live about 4 miles from club). The unknown is changing the entrance.

I'm really hoping when the entrance is moved, the new road will actually be wide enough for 2 cars.

I've wondered about this for a long time. This is the answer to keeping the gate closed. This makes much more sense than wearing a badge around the gun range to prove you belong.
Swipe your card, enter, and the gate closes behind you. Noone who doesn't belong can enter.

I'd even be the first to donate some extra $$$ to purchase this gate.
